Equine therapy is a specialised type of therapy that is a holistic and sensory experience. Children and young people work with a horse and expert horse handler for each session. Sessions include carrying out tasks such as feeding, grooming and leading the horse by rope.
Equine therapy has been found to reduce anxiety, depression, build trust, increase confidence and increase awareness of gentle non-verbal cues.
As many of the children and young people in our residencies may have experienced ACEs or may have been diagnosed with ADHD or emotional and behavioural disorders we encourage and offer this activity to everyone.
Horse riding can offer many benefits to children and young people. Horse riding is classed as moderate physical activity for the improvement of physical health. As well as the physical benefits, it offers new challenges to build confidence and self-esteem.
We have partnered with local stables to be able to offer horse riding as an activity to all our residents. Residents are supported by an experienced horse riding instructor and a support staff member from our Whe Care team.
Animal therapy is the use of animals to support young people to cope with and aid recovery from some physical and mental health conditions. As well as it just simply being a fun and enjoyable experience!
Residents have the opportunity to meet guinea pigs, corn snakes, rabbits and lizards.
We arrange retreats for residents that include activities such as team building and orienteering to support residents in build problem solving, leadership and communication skills.
Please note that all retreats are risk assessed and approved by social services prior to attendance.
